2026 Declared the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a steady rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the wave in gaming appears uniquely powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.

If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
