Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Counters President Trump's Warning to Relocate FIFA World Cup Games from City
Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, suggested that the municipality was prepared for a face-off with President Donald Trump over his assertion that he could order FIFA to relocate World Cup tournament matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located 22 miles south-west of Boston.
Wu spoke on a local podcast recently to answer criticism from the White House, which had described her as "radical left." Trump had threatened that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "address its issues."
A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even the president, can change it.
She added, "We're in a world where for attention, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are issued at people and cities who refuse to back down and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We will keep being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting Boston's values." Wu concluded by stressing her commitment for the city, saying, "Fully committed for Boston."
Trump's Comments and FIFA's Role
Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also visited the White House and presented World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to the president as gifts.
Earlier, Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police car being burned. He replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the president of the organization, who's phenomenal."
He added, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're taking over some areas in Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Information
President Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with the FIFA president about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 host cities across the continent.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The 48-team event is scheduled to be held from 11 June to 19 July next summer.
