House of worship Attacker Had Been Freed Under Bond Following Rape Arrest, Law enforcement State
As stated by law enforcement, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of rape and was out under conditional release when he perpetrated a lethal knife and car attack on a Manchester Jewish temple.
Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz lost their lives during the assault on Thursday, while three people are still hospitalized.
Police believe that the attacker may have been influenced by "radical religious views" and stated that additional suspects, aged from late teens to mid-forties, were detained on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of terrorist activities.
Tributes Offered to Victims
On Friday, families of the deceased men expressed their grief to their loved ones, praising them as heroes who died protecting people.
Mr Daulby, 53 and the 66-year-old victim were killed in the attack when the assailant drove a car at members of the public prior to stabbing people that morning.
Local authorities confirmed Mr Daulby was hit by police gunfire as they shot the attacker soon after the alarm was raised.
Family Statements
The relatives of one victim said he "lost his life in the brave attempt to save others" and his final act "was one of profound courage and he will always be honored".
The second victim, a local resident, was working as a security guard at the synagogue.
In tribute, his family said: "He had been so compassionate, caring and constantly tried to converse and get to know people.
"He remained dedicated to his spouse, family and loved his food. He will be sorely missed by his partner, family, companions and neighborhood."
Investigation Initiated into Police Response
The Independent Office for Police Conduct said it would examine the use of lethal force by firearms officers responding to the attack, which occurred on Yom Kippur, the most sacred occasion in the Jewish calendar.
Officers with firearms inadvertently fatally shot Mr Daulby, while worshipper Yoni Finlay was also shot by police leaving him serious injuries.
This inquiry will focus on the "circumstances surrounding the fatal police shooting of Jihad Al-Shamie", as well as "if police may have caused or contributed to the demise of the individual later found to have suffered the fatal gunshot wound".
Assault Particulars Disclosed
Anti-terrorism authorities also provided more details about what happened in the period leading to the assault at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue.
In a statement released to the media the next day, a senior officer said: "We have been told from eyewitness statements that a individual was seen acting suspiciously outside the synagogue before he was approached by protection staff and left the area".
At the time, the situation had not been communicated to authorities. Fifteen minutes later, "the suspect returned in a vehicle and initiated his violent assault," the official continued.
Police are applying for legal orders to extend the custody of all individuals now in custody, he additionally stated. On Thursday, Greater Manchester Police confirmed additional persons - two men in their 30s and a woman in her sixties - had been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.
Firsthand Accounts
Rabbi Daniel Walker was conducting services when his place of worship was assaulted and recounted witnessing "malice and hostility" as a man began "ramming the entrance, hurling large containers, attempting everything possible to gain entry".
Commending the rapid response of those at the synagogue, he told reporters: "I saw genuine heroism, it must be noted, and people who rushed to assist fellow worshippers rather than running away. It was remarkable."
Alan Levy, the temple's head official recounted to journalists, he heard the attacker yelling "this is their punishment for killing our children", prior to "striking with his blade into the windows, attempting to break in".
