Wonder Man Preview Reveals The MCU's Most Meta Series To Date

The Marvel studio is aware that audiences might be experiencing some superhero fatigue, so they've opted to include that very idea into their upcoming superhero series.

Indeed, the first trailer for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The preview, which premiered on Oct. 10, also quietly moved the Wonder Man release date later from its initial end of 2025 slot into January 2026.

Why one more superhero film? People is weary of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to surprise audiences. To reinvent the entire category of storytelling.

The interviewer responds: "Have you given any thought about casting?"

The preview then cuts to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the conversation on his mobile device, and the trailer ends.

What We Know About Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the MCU. The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a film star who becomes a superhero (Wonder Man).

The supporting cast features Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's manager Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.

Marvel's Meta-Humor Approach

We have limited information about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that the studio intends to laugh at its own tropes.

In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the studio is fully committed on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the star power of its previous leads? We'll have to wait and see.
